What is SpamExperts®?
SpamExperts® offers professional email security solutions such as incoming- and outgoing email filtering as well as email archiving solutions. They're one of the most precise spam filtering solutions on the market. With the use of multiple filtering technologies such as advanced IP-reputation systems, a large number of message content classifiers they manage to deliver nearly 100% filtering accuracy.
Do you offer it free of charge?
Yes, at Hosting4Real we've made SpamExperts® available for our shared hosting customers. The solution is provided as an opt-in solution for domains, meaning either we or you as a customer have to enable it for specific domains.
Why is it not enabled by default?
We've decided to not enabling the filtering by default for all domains on our infrastructure. A lot of the domains we host do not have any email accounts so enabling filtering for domains by default would increase the overall cost, thus resulting in we wouldn't be able to offer the filtering at all.
Can I enable it for all my domains on my hosting account?
We advise to only enable SpamExperts® incoming filtering for domains that actually receive spam. If you do not receive any spam, please save the hassle of enabling it, it only increases our cost which in the long run affects the cost of our products.
At no point in time should you enable filtering for domains without active email accounts. In case this happens, we will disable the filtering for that specific domain.
If you're using external email services such as other hosting providers or email service providers such as Google Apps, Office 365 or similar, then you should not enable email filtering, this will cause issues with mail delivery, and if you decided to use external email service providers anyway, then you shouldn't use our filter.
I use the hosting for reselling, can I enable it for the domains I host?
Short answer: No, you cannot.
Long answer: Reselling our hosting isn't exactly allowed, and thus using the spam filter isn't allowed either. In any case, if you would like to use the filter even for the domains you're hosting for the reselling you do, please contact us, and we will decide whether it will be allowed or not.
What's the difference between SpamExperts® and SpamAssassin?
SpamExperts® offers way more accurate email-filtering, it's using multiple technologies to decide if something should be marked as spam or not, where SpamAssassin, in general, is simpler and uses simpler methods to detect possible spam, and it isn't updated in realtime like SpamExperts®.
What technologies do SpamExperts® use and how does it rate spam?
SpamExperts® uses a lot of different technologies to decide whether a specific email should be seen as spam or not.
There are a few stages of how it performs filtering: pre-data, post-data and a stage in between these two.
The pre-data stage includes Connection rate limiting, IP Blacklist checking, destination domain verification, SMTP protocol compliance, sender address inspection, recipient validation checks, whitelist/blacklist of sender and/or recipients, recipient connection rate limit, SPF checks, content reputation feeds, bounce address tag validation as well as simple private signatures.
On the post-data stage, this includes validation of DKIM and DMARC, rules defined by a specific user, virus scanning, DNS and URI reputation checks, fingerprinting, statistical information about senders and heuristics defined by SpamExperts.
In between these two stages, there's also a direct feed looking at general IP reputation, if the sending IP is known for spending spam, and their sending history.
With most or all these metrics - the software will calculate a combined score - and depending on this score it will either accept the email or mark it as spam and thus putting it in the quarantine.
Some of the pre-data checks will result in dropping the emails before even reaching the post-data stage, this only happens if the sending server is poorly configured or being a part of one or more blacklists.
Why do most of my incoming emails end in spam?
SpamExperts® operates with very high accuracy, this ensures that only legitimate emails goes through but at the same time that the filter doesn't actually block legitimate emails unless something on the sending server isn't configured as it should.
In case most of your incoming email goes to spam are often due to if you're redirecting other email accounts outside your domain or hosting account towards your domain. This on a lot of mail servers rewrites the sender, which as a result will cause a lot of the filtering technologies to see the email as spam, most likely due to invalid SPF or DMARC records.
In this case, do not "Release and train" the email but rather just "Release" and then ask us to disable the spam filter again for your domain, or ask the forwarding hosting provider to fix their forwarding of emails.
Can I disable the filtering myself again?
Currently, it's not possible to disable the filtering for a domain within cPanel. We're using a slightly modified version of the SpamExperts® module on our servers, and the SpamExperts® module does not yet support disabling filtering for a domain. In case you want to disable filtering for a domain, please contact our support department.
Can I use this if I use the hosting primarily for email?
Yes, it's possible but keep the number of protected domains at a minimum since it directly affects the pricing. Misuse of this can result in either suspension of using the service or the possibility to be charged per-domain basis.
